Mango is the undisputed most popular fruit amongst millions of people in the orient particularly in the Pakistan Sub-continent where it is considered to be the King of Fruits. In fact, there is no exaggeration in claiming that mango, because of its excellent flavor, attractive fragrance, beautiful shades of colors, delicious taste and healthful value, is now recognized as one of the best fruits in the world market.

Mangoes are available from April to September, June and July usually offer the best produce. The tree is related to the pistachio and cashew and grows to an average of 50 feet in height. Each tree produces about 100 mangoes. If you haven't tried a fresh mango, you're in for a treat!
Mangoes are mostly eaten chilled, as it not only enhance their shelf life but also remove the "heat" in the fruit. Pakistani mangoes are rich in Vitamin A, C and D and other antioxidant vitamins. Mangoes have more carotenoids than most other fruits - and that helps toward off colds and reduces the risk of cancer and heart disease. It is a member of the cashew family.
A ripe mango is sweet, with a unique taste that nevertheless varies from variety to variety. Apple
Apples contain dietary fiber in their skins and core. About 10% of an apple is made up of carbohydrate and 4% of an apple is made up from a variety of vitamins and minerals. The rest of the apple, more than 80%, is water. A medium-sized eating apple contains about 40 calories; one Kilogram (2.2 lb) of fresh apples provides approximately 2100kJ (500 kcal) of energy. Excluding the peel and core of apples from the diet halves the amount of vitamin C and dietary fiber consumed but makes very little difference to the sugar intake. Red crunchy apples are grown in naturally controlled temperature, cultivating a most fragrant aroma and sweetest flavor that would be a delight to any of taste buds. Apple is a mountainous region fruit often described as "living plant organ" when on the tree and continues its life even after harvest. Apples belong to the rose family.

Apple is a mountainous region fruit often described as "living plant organ" when on the tree and continues its life even after harvest. Apples belong to the rose family. There are more then 7,000 varieties of apples grown in the world. Apple trees need to rest for about 900-1000 hours at below 45 o F to properly flower and fruit. If 100 apple trees are grown from the seeds of one tree, they will all be different.
In the diverse conditions of Balochistan, in Pakistan, its uplands are ideally suited for the production of apples in a comparatively disease free environment. We export the traditional variety of apples namely Golden delicious, Turkulu and Amri. August to December is the peak harvest season for Apples.
Production in Pakistan
Pakistan produced about 600,000 above metric tones. In Pakistan, apples have been grown as Commercial Fruit Plants in Balochistan and N.W.F.P., since long. Apple plantation was taken up by the growers in Swat, Dir, Mansehra, Parachinar, Chitral, Hunza, North and South Waziristan Agencies. District Swat covers an area of approximately 4000 square miles within the Malakand Division. The area is mainly a river valley surrounded by mountains, which also have fertile valleys feedings into the main Swat Plain. District Swat is the most important of all the apple producing districts of N.W.F.P. Next in importance come the districts of Mansehra, Dir, Abbottabad, Chitral and Hunza.

Banana

Bananas are among the most widely consumed foods in the world. Banana comes in a variety of sizes and colors when ripe, including yellow, purple and red. Bananas is eaten raw. The flesh varies in taste from starchy to sweet, and texture from firm to mushy.
Export bananas are picked green, and then usually ripened in ripening rooms when they arrive in their country of destination and may show up at the retail market still fully green. Bananas are carefully handled, transported quickly to the seaboard, cooled and shipped under sophisticated refrigeration.
They are refrigerated at between 13.5 and 15 °C (57 and 59 °F) during transportation. This sophisticated technology allows storage and transport for 3-4 weeks at 13 degrees Celsius.
On arrival at the destination the bananas are held at about 17 degrees Celsius and treated with a low concentration of ethylene. After a few days the fruit has begun to ripen and it will be distributed for retail sale.

Apricots

It is a small tree, 8-12 m tall, with a trunk up to 40 cm diameter and a dense, spreading canopy. The leaves are ovate, 5-9 cm long and 4-8 cm wide, with a rounded base, a pointed tip and a finely serrated margin. The flowers are 2-4.5 cm diameter, with five white to pinkish petals; they are produced singly or in pairs in early spring before the leaves. The fruit is a drupe similar to a small peach, 1.5-2.5 cm diameter (larger in some modern cultivars), from yellow to orange, often tinged red on the side most exposed to the sun; its surface is usually pubescent. The single seed is enclosed in a hard stony shell, often called a "stone", with a grainy, smooth texture except for three ridges running down one side.
Pakistan is amongst the top five producers of apricots around the world.
Benefits
Due to their high fiber to volume ratio, dried apricots are used to relieve constipation and induce diarrhea. Apricots possess the highest levels and widest variety of carotenoids. Carotenoids are antioxidants that help prevent heart disease, reduce "bad cholesterol" levels, and protect against cancer. They are much helpful in regenerating body fluids, detoxifying, and quenching thirst.

Cherrys

The cherry is a fleshy fruit that contains a single stony seed. Cherries contain anthocyanins, the red pigment in berries. Cherry anthocyanins have been shown to reduce pain and inflammation. Anthocyanins are also potent antioxidants under active research for a variety of potential health benefits. Human beings who received whole tart cherry powder mixed into a high-fat diet did not gain as much weight or build up as much body fat, and their blood showed much lower levels of inflammation indicators that have been linked to heart disease and diabetes. In addition, they had significantly lower blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides than the other people.

Grapes

Grapes grow in clusters of 6 to 300, and are crimson, black, dark blue, yellow, green and pink. "White" grapes are actually green in color, and are evolutionarily derived from the red grape. Dried grapes are referred to as 'raisins' or the local equivalent. Grapes can be eaten raw or used for making jam, juice, jelly, vinegar, wine, grape seed extracts, raisins, and grape seed oil.
Sweet and juicy, the Indian seedless Grapes are a favorite of many all over the world. A variety of grapes are cultivated in India, each having its own unique taste and flavor. Devoid of any artificial fertilizers and colors, they are grown naturally in the right climate and ripened to perfection before being consumed.
Grapes are mostly cultivated in Northern regions of Pakistan. Grapes are an excellent source of Vitamin C.
The growing of grapes, or viticulture, is a year-round job. There are more than 50 varieties of grapes. Grapes are a rich source of vitamin A. The phenols found in skin of grapes slow down or stop the formation of certain kinds of blood clots that can lead to heart attacks.

Guava

Guava fruit, usually 4 to 12 cm long, are round or oval depending on the species. The outer skin may be rough, often with a bitter taste, or soft and sweet. Varying between species, the skin can be any thickness, is usually green before maturity, but becomes yellow, maroon, or green when ripe. Guava fruit generally have a pronounced and typical fragrance, similar to lemon rind but less sharp. Guava pulp may be sweet or sour, off-white to deep pink, with the seeds in the central pulp of variable number and hardness, again depending on species. In Asia, fresh raw guava is often dipped in preserved prune powder or salt. Because of the skin's high level of pectin, boiled guava is also extensively used to make candies, preserves, jellies, jams, marmalades (goiabada), and also for juices and aguas frescas.
Guava is a round or oval shaped usually 4 to 12 cm long. Guava pulp is sweet and off-white or deep pink with midline seeds of variable number and hardness. Guava has a fragrance similar to lemon rind, but less sharp.
The guava is a good source of several vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, calcium, potassium, iron, carotenoids (vitamin A), and folate. It is also a good source of fiber, which is known to help prevent gastrointestinal cancers as well as lowering cholesterol levels. In addition, the level of vitamin C in the edible rind of the guava is five times higher than that of an orange.
Selecting Guava Fruit
Ripe guavas have a fragrant aroma that ranges from strong and penetrating to mild and pleasant; shells give to gentle pressure. Guavas sold in markets are usually quite firm and should be ripened further at home before using. The fruit ranges from thin-shelled with many seeds embedded in a firm pulp to thick-shelled with a few seeds. The flavor ranges from sweet to highly acidic.
Storing Guava Fruit
Ripen guavas at room temperature until they give to gentle pressure. Refrigerate ripe guavas immediately, and use within 2 days.
Freezing Guava Fruit
Use firm, ripe guava. Wash, peel thinly, and cut in half. With a teaspoon, scoop out seeds and soft pulp. Pack into moisture and vapor proof containers and cover with a medium syrup (2 parts sugar to 1 part water). Do not heat; the sugar will dissolve without heat if stirred. Allow 2 cups of syrup for each quart of guavas. Seal and freeze. Lime juice may be added if guavas are sweet. Guavas will keep at 0 degrees F for 8 months to 1 year.
Uses for Guava Fruit
Sweet or low acid guava is best suited to eating raw. Sour or highly acid guava lends itself to cooking or freezing with some sugar added. (1 fruit equals 100 grams (edible portion), approximately one-half cup.) Tropicals may vary in natural pectin, acid and sugar content from one season to another due to the variations of the climate.
